LeanLaw offers a variety of insight tools through its Reports page, which you can access by clicking the Reports button on the main navigation bar. Each report presents your firm's data according to specialized metrics, provides filters to navigate and sort that data, and can neatly print the report or export its data to a .csv file for uses outside of LeanLaw. You can use reports to allocate payments to your attorneys and firm, measure performance, print client contact information, and more.

Need help finding the right report? Below is an overview of the reports we offer, sorted by section you’ll find them in. Click the title of a report to visit it in your firm.

By Client and Matter

Summarizes billable totals (hours, fixed fees, and expenses) by client. Like all client and matter reports, you can use the Show Matters filter to expand each client in the report and show their matters as well. Billable reports combine two types of data: billed and not billed.

  • Billed: These are items which have been made into an invoice, even if the invoice hasn't yet been sent out to your client. Invoices in the Billing tabs of Draft, Review, Approved, or QuickBooks are in the Billed category.

  • Not billed: These are items that have been recorded but not yet made into an invoice; you can find in the Ready to Bill tab of the Billing page.

Combines billed and unbilled hours and amounts, sorted by client and matter. One significant feature of the productivity report is its reporting on write-downs, letting you see precise amounts as well as percentages of all time entries written down. This report is great for identifying strengths and weaknesses in productivity at a client and matter level.

Compares unbilled totals (hours, expenses, fixed fees) against the client's receivables balance, last payment, trust balance, and evergreen trust amount. This report is often used ahead of monthly billing as a summary of what needs to be invoiced that month and A/R for specific clients.

Compares billed hours worked, expenses, and fixed fees against payments collected from clients. Also includes account balances for the clients' trust and receivables accounts. This report is great for analyzing revenue on a client-by-client basis.

By User

Note: A “user” is anyone in your firm capable of contributing to a matter or project, such as principles, attorneys, paralegals, and timekeepers.

Summarizes billable totals (hours, fixed fees, and expenses) by users in your firm. By default, billable reports combine two types of data: billed and not billed.

Totals billed and unbilled hours and amounts, sorted by user. One significant feature of the productivity report is its reporting on write-down (if you firm has it enabled in Reports Settings), letting you see precise amounts as well as percentages of all time entries written down. This report is great for identifying strengths and weaknesses in productivity at a user level.

This is a very powerful report that take collections and splits it out between attorneys that worked on a matter, and can be configured to calculate origination fees. Alone or combined with the distribution feature this report has the potential to fully automate compensation for your attorneys.

The report also allows drilling into individual payments and seeing detailed revenue allocation for payments and invoices. This can help provide clarity in complex scenarios such as partial payments.

Totals collected payments from all matters where a user was listed as an originating attorney, lists the user's expenses from those matters, and lists the combined total. Note that if your firm lists multiple originating attorneys on a matter, the revenue for that matter will contribute to each user's total--this is not a compensation report. This report is helpful for analyzing the revenue from clients brought into the firm by originating attorneys.

Totals WIP, billed, and collected data from matters where each user has been included in the matter's billing and rates. Work in progress (WIP) totals unbilled entries found in Ready to Bill. Billed includes entries in all forms of invoice (whether they be in Drafts or sent to clients). Collected totals payments recorded in the QuickBooks or Trust Account tabs of billing. This report provides a great overview of attorney performance over a time period.

Sorts and totals all of the firm's work in progress (WIP) activity by the user it's assigned to, including a category for Not Assigned. WIP includes unbilled work only; once an item enters a draft invoice or a complete invoice, it will no longer appear in this WIP report. This report is great for measuring user performance and building strategy for ongoing projects.

By Responsible

Summarizes billable totals (hours, fixed fees, and expenses) into a list of all responsible attorneys in your firm. By default, billable reports combine two types of data: billed and not billed.

By Practice Area

Sorts billable totals (hours, fixed fees, and expenses) according to the practice areas set up in your firm's settings. By default, billable reports combine two types of data: billed and not billed.

Totals data for WIP, billed, and collected, sorted by practice area. Work in progress (WIP) totals unbilled entries found in Ready to Bill. Billed includes entries in all forms of invoice (whether they be in Drafts or sent to clients). Collected totals payments recorded in the QuickBooks or Trust Account tabs of billing. This report provides a great overview of practice areas over a time period.

Totals billed hours, expenses, and fixed fees, and compares the combination against collected revenue for each practice area. This report is great for comparing the revenue of your firm's practice areas and can filter by time period or by distribution.

Accounting

Totals the overdue and currently outstanding balances for all clients. Clicking on a client's aging period will show all outstanding invoices for that client with due date, creation date, and information of any partial payments made. Note that only invoices made in LeanLaw, which have been finalized by reaching the QuickBooks tab of billing, will contribute to this report. This report is great for tracking anticipated collections and overdue bills.

Lists all clients' and matters' trust balances, their work-in-progress (WIP) amounts, as well as what percentage of their WIP is covered by their trust balance. This report is great for comparing trust balances against WIP to anticipate adjustments to trust accounts or billing. If you click on a client in this report, you can also view and print a history of all of their trust deposits and payments.

Other Client Reports

This report is great for analyzing recent and ongoing contingency matters.

Matter Management

Lists all matters as well as the date they were created, the date they were archived (if applicable), and the date of their last activity. By combining the Time Period filter with the Include Matters filter, you can use this report to identify a matter or client based on when a certain activity occurred.

Lists the responsible and originating attorneys for all matters, as well as their hourly rates on those matters. This report is useful for a full review of the rates structure on matters across the entire firm to ensure there are no mistakes and that you are not over- or undercharging clients.

Other

Our most flexible and customizable report. You can select your own reporting metric (hours, expenses, etc.) your own time unit (days, months, quarters, years), your own time period to analyze, and your own data group. The data can be organized by user, by client and matter, or by practice area. This report will create columns of the time unit you selected and report whatever data you requested within the time period you selected. Because it's so customizable, this report has countless uses.

Only appears if your firm has the custom checkbox enabled in the Firm Info page of your firm's Settings. This report covers only billed data (including invoices currently in drafts and paid off by clients) across the firm to compare bills from time entries which you have marked with your custom checkbox, and those you haven't. This report is great for isolating how much money your firm is billing for your custom checkbox work and comparing it with non-checkbox billing.

For more information on the custom checkbox, click here.

My Reports

Creates a revenue report based on all collected payments for matters in which the current LeanLaw user participated or was listed as a responsible or originating attorney. This report is great for getting an idea of what you've been contributing to the firm and what you can expect to be allocated.

This report is identical to the WIP, Billed, Collected by User report, but it overviews only the current LeanLaw user's contributions. This report is great for allowing users to visualize their productivity and profitability.
