Installing and Using the LeanLaw Desktop Timer App
How to download, install, and use the LeanLaw Desktop Tracker on Windows and Mac — including time entry, My Day, timers, and troubleshooting common installation warnings.
The LeanLaw Desktop Tracker is a lightweight app for Windows and Mac that lets you track time, run timers, and log entries without keeping a browser open. All activity syncs automatically to LeanLaw.

📋 Prerequisite: You must already have an active LeanLaw account to use the Desktop Tracker. The app is available for Windows (PC) and Mac. |
Installing the Desktop Tracker
Step 1: Open Settings
Click the gear icon ⚙️ in the top-right corner of LeanLaw.
Step 2: Go to Tools
Under My Settings, select the Tools tab.
Step 3: Install
Click Install next to LeanLaw Desktop Tracker. This downloads the installer to your device.
Troubleshooting Installation Warnings
Desktop operating systems may show security warnings for downloaded applications. These are expected — the LeanLaw Desktop Tracker is safe to install.
Windows: 'This file may be harmful' Warning
A warning may appear next to leanlaw.exe in your browser's download bar.
- Action: Click the arrow menu next to the file and choose Keep, then Open.
Windows: 'Windows Protected Your PC' Screen
A blue Windows Defender SmartScreen prompt may appear.
- Action: Click More Info, then click Run Anyway. The app is verified as safe.

✅ Safe to proceed: Both of these warnings are triggered because the app is distributed outside the Microsoft Store. The LeanLaw Desktop Tracker is a legitimate, verified application. |
Using the Desktop Tracker
My Matters Tab
The My Matters tab lists all matters you have access to. From here you can:
- Create a time entry: Click the + icon next to any matter to open the time entry form
- Start a timer: Click the clock icon to start a running timer for that matter
My Day Tab
The My Day tab shows all time entries for the selected date. Click the pencil icon to edit any entry. You can adjust time using the arrows or type it manually. Click Save to Timesheet when done.
Timers Tab
The Timers tab shows all in-progress or paused timers. From here:
- Start a new timer: Click Start Timer
- Pause/resume: Click the pause icon on any running timer
- Convert to time entry: Click the disk/save icon to turn a timer into a time entry — you'll be prompted to select a client, matter, and description before saving

💡 Note: You can have multiple timers open at once, but only one timer can be running at a time. |
Mobile App (Alternative to Desktop Tracker)
LeanLaw also offers a free mobile app for iOS and Android. It supports time entries, expenses, timers, and matter viewing — all syncing automatically to your LeanLaw account.
