Running Timers in LeanLaw: Desktop Tracker and Browser

How to start, pause, and convert timers in LeanLaw — covering both the Desktop Tracker app and browser-based timers on the Calendar page.

LeanLaw supports running timers from two places: the Desktop Tracker app (Windows and Mac) and the Calendar page in your browser. Both let you capture time as you work and convert timers into time entries when you're done.

📋 Key rule: You can have multiple timers open at once, but only one timer can be running at a time. Starting a new timer automatically pauses any currently running timer.

Timers in the Desktop Tracker

The Desktop Tracker's Timers tab is the most powerful timer interface — you can manage multiple simultaneous timers from any matter without keeping a browser open.

Starting a Timer

  1. Open the Desktop Tracker app and go to the My Matters tab.
  2. Find the matter you want to track time for.
  3. Click the clock icon next to the matter name. The timer starts immediately and appears in the Timers tab.

Alternatively, go directly to the Timers tab and click Start Timer to create a new timer and select the matter.

Pausing and Resuming Timers

From the Timers tab:

  • Pause: Click the pause icon on any running timer. The timer stops accumulating time.
  • Resume: Click the play icon on a paused timer to continue. The previously running timer pauses automatically.

Converting a Timer to a Time Entry

  1. In the Timers tab, click the save/disk icon on the timer you want to convert.
  2. A time entry form opens. The hours are pre-filled from the timer.
  3. Select the client and matter (if not already set), add a description, and review the hours.
  4. Click Save. The time entry is created and syncs to LeanLaw. The timer is cleared.

💡 Tip: You don't have to stop a timer to convert it. If you want to keep a timer running while saving the current time as an entry, use the Keep Timer option — the timer continues from zero while the entry is saved.

Timers in the Browser (Calendar Page)

Browser-based timers run from the Calendar page and are useful when you're working in the LeanLaw web app without the Desktop Tracker installed.

Starting a Browser Timer

  1. Navigate to the Calendar page.
  2. Click Start New Timer.
  3. Select the client. You can leave matter and description fields blank for now — fill them in when you save.
  4. The timer runs in the background. You can navigate to other parts of LeanLaw while the timer continues.

Saving a Browser Timer as a Time Entry

  1. Return to the Calendar page.
  2. Click the save icon on the timer.
  3. A time entry form appears — add the description, verify the matter and hours, and adjust if needed.
  4. Click Save. The entry appears on the Calendar and in the Time Entries page.
