Billables Reports in LeanLaw

How to use LeanLaw's billables reports to track billable totals by attorney, client/matter, practice area, and LEDES codes — including the WIP, Billed, Collected report and the Ready-to-Bill view.

Billables reports track the financial lifecycle of work from the moment it's recorded through to collection — distinguishing between unbilled work (WIP), work that's been invoiced (Billed), and work that's been paid (Collected).

The Four Billing Stages in Reports

Stage

Definition

Billable (WIP)

Work that has been recorded and is eligible to be billed — hours, fixed fees, or expenses not yet on an invoice.

Draft

Work that has been included in a draft invoice but not yet approved or submitted to QuickBooks.

Billed

Work included in an invoice that has been submitted to QuickBooks and sent to the client.

Collected

Work included in an invoice that has been paid by the client.

The WIP, Billed, Collected Report

The WIP, Billed, Collected report is the most comprehensive billables view — showing work across all four billing stages in one place. It's available grouped by user, client/matter, responsible attorney, and practice area.

Key uses:

  • Month-end review: See all WIP that should be invoiced this cycle alongside what's already been sent and collected.
  • Cash flow forecasting: The Billed column shows what's outstanding — revenue you've earned but haven't collected yet.
  • Expense tracking: Includes billed vs. unbilled expenses. Use this to ensure no expenses are left unbilled.

💡 Tip: Enable Show Matters in the filter to see client/matter breakdowns. Click into any row to drill down to individual line items.
