Matter Rates and Activity Reports in LeanLaw
How to use LeanLaw's Matter Activity and Matter Rates reports to review rate structures and billing activity across matters.
The Matter Rates and Matter Activity reports give you visibility into rate configurations across your matters and the billing activity on individual matters — useful for auditing rate consistency, reviewing matter histories, and understanding pricing patterns across your firm.
Matter Activity Report
The Matter Activity report shows billing activity scoped to individual matters — time entries, expenses, and fixed fee details for a selected period and matter.
Key uses:
- Matter billing history: Review everything that's been billed on a specific matter over its lifetime.
- Pre-billing audit: Verify all entries for a matter before staging an invoice — ensuring descriptions are complete and entries are correctly attributed.
- Client reporting: Export matter activity as supporting documentation when a client requests detail on their billing.
Navigate to: Reports → Matter Activity (or the equivalent location in the current product UI — verify)
Matter Rates Report
The Matter Rates report reviews the rate structures configured on your matters — showing which rates are set at the matter level, which users have matter-specific rate overrides, and where rates may be missing or set to $0.
Key uses:
- Rate audit: Identify matters where a user's rate hasn't been set (defaulting to the firm rate) or where a matter-level override might be inconsistent with firm policy.
- Onboarding new matters: Verify that all newly created matters have appropriate rates before time entries are recorded.
- Pricing review: Review rate structures before annual rate increases to understand the scope of changes needed.
