Collecting Payments Online with LeanLaw Payments

How to set up and use online payment links in LeanLaw — including integration, invoice payment links, full balance links, and copying payment links for phone payments.

LeanLaw's payment link feature — part of LeanLaw Payments — lets clients pay invoices online via credit card or ACH bank transfer. Payment links are powered by Confido Legal and integrated directly into LeanLaw's invoice emails and billing workflow.

What is LeanLaw Payments?

LeanLaw Payments is LeanLaw's suite of collections and payments features, designed to help firms get paid faster and reduce accounts receivable. It includes:

  • Invoice payment links: Clients pay invoices via a secure link in their invoice email.
  • Full balance links: Clients pay their entire outstanding account balance in one transaction.
  • Trust deposit requests: Clients fund their trust/retainer account electronically.
  • Account summaries: Automatic balance summaries in invoice emails showing what's owed and what's been paid.

📋 Confido Legal is the payment processor: All online payments in LeanLaw are processed by Confido Legal, which complies with legal ethics requirements — critically, no fees are deducted from trust accounts. Processing fees are charged to the firm's operating account only.

Setting Up Confido Legal

To use payment links, your firm must connect a Confido Legal account to LeanLaw:

  1. In LeanLaw, go to Settings → Confido Legal
  2. If you already have a Confido Legal account, sign in to connect it.
  3. If you don't have an account, follow the sign-up process. Confido Legal requires identity verification (KYC/AML) to comply with financial regulations — this includes verifying firm ownership. The process typically takes 1–2 business days.
  4. Once connected, a green confirmation screen with checkmarks appears. Payment links are now available on invoice emails.

📋 Operating account required: Confido Legal requires a connected operating bank account to debit processing fees from. Trust accounts are never charged fees — this is a compliance requirement to protect IOLTA funds.

Payment Link Types

Link Type

How It Works

Invoice Payment Link

Tied to a specific invoice. Clients can pay any amount up to the invoice total — including partial payments. Sent automatically with invoice emails.

Full Balance Link

Covers the client's entire outstanding account balance (all invoices). Client must pay the full amount — no partial payments. Available only when the balance exceeds the current invoice amount.

How Payment Links Appear in Invoice Emails

When your firm's Confido Legal account is connected and payment links are enabled in Email Settings, payment buttons automatically appear in invoice emails. Clients click the button and are taken to a secure, branded payment page where they can pay by:

  • Credit or debit card
  • ACH bank transfer

Once paid, LeanLaw automatically records the payment and updates the invoice status in both LeanLaw and QuickBooks Online.

Copying a Payment Link for Phone Payments

If a client calls to pay by phone, you can copy the invoice's payment link and send it to them directly — without sending a new invoice email:

  1. Go to Billing → Manage Invoices.
  2. Find the invoice to be paid.
  3. Click the three-dot menu (⋮) next to the invoice.
  4. Select Copy Payment Link. The link is copied to your clipboard.
  5. Share the link with the client via text, email, or any other channel. Payments made through the link are recorded automatically.

📋 Note: If no payment link has been generated for the invoice yet, selecting Copy Payment Link will generate a new one. Full balance links are not available through this method — only individual invoice links. For full balance links, the invoice must have been emailed from LeanLaw at least once.
