Period Reports and Lean Insights Custom Analytics in LeanLaw
How to use LeanLaw's Period Reports for customizable billing comparisons, and how to get started with Lean Insights for advanced custom dashboards and analytics.
Beyond the standard reports, LeanLaw offers two advanced analytics tools: Period Reports for customizable cross-period comparisons, and Lean Insights — a full dashboard and custom reporting suite for deeper firm analytics.
Period Reports
Period Reports are highly customizable reports that let you compare billing and productivity data across multiple time periods side-by-side. They are useful for:
- Month-over-month comparisons: See how this month's hours, billing, or collections compare to last month or the same period last year.
- Custom groupings: Organize data by any combination of users, clients, matters, practice areas, or time periods.
- Trend analysis: Spot patterns in billing, collections, or productivity across multiple periods at once.

📋 Note: Period Reports are highly flexible but require more configuration than standard reports. The report builder lets you select which metrics to include and how to group them. Plan your report structure before building to save time. |
Custom Checkbox Report
The Custom Checkbox Report compares billing for time entries that have been marked (flagged) vs. unmarked. Firms that use a custom billing flag on entries can use this report to track how flagged entries differ from standard billing — for example, comparing pro bono entries against billable entries, or tracking entries that required partner review.

Lean Insights Overview
Lean Insights is LeanLaw's advanced analytics and dashboard suite. Unlike standard reports (which use fixed templates), Lean Insights lets you build fully custom visualizations using LeanLaw's underlying data.
Key capabilities:
- Custom dashboards: Build dashboards with charts, tables, and KPI cards tailored to your firm's specific reporting needs.
- Multiple datasets: Build reports from two pre-built datasets — Activities (time entries, expenses, fixed fees) and InvoicePayments (invoices and collections).
- Advanced filtering: Apply complex filters, date ranges, and groupings not available in standard reports.
- Sharing: Share dashboards with other LeanLaw users at your firm.
