Revenue Reports in LeanLaw

How to use LeanLaw's revenue reports to analyze billed and collected amounts by client/matter, attorney, practice area, and originating attorney — and how date filters affect what each report shows.

Revenue reports answer the fundamental firm performance question: how much did we bill, and how much did we collect? Unlike productivity reports (which focus on hours), revenue reports focus on dollars — and specifically on the distinction between work that's been invoiced and work that's been paid.

The Revenue Timeline: Billed vs. Collected

Revenue reports in LeanLaw are concerned with two specific points in an invoice's lifecycle:

  • Billed: When an invoice is sent to the client. Revenue is recognized as 'Billed' on the invoice date.
  • Collected: When a payment is recorded against the invoice. Revenue becomes 'Collected' on the payment date.

⚠️ Date filter behavior: Revenue reports filter by the action date — not the work date. A report filtered to 'December' shows invoices sent in December (Billed) and payments received in December (Collected). An invoice sent November 30 and paid December 19 would appear in December's Collected data only — not in December's Billed data.

Revenue Reports by Client & Matter

The Revenue by Client & Matter report shows billed and collected amounts for each client and matter. It also shows trust balances and receivables (account balances) — which always reflect today's date, not the selected filter period.

Navigate to: Reports → By Client and Matter → Revenue

Drill into a client to see their matters. Drill into a matter to see individual invoices and payments.

Revenue Reports by Attorney (Compensation)

The Compensation (Revenue by Attorney) report shows how collected revenue is attributed across your team — broken down by Worked, Worked Share, Origination, Responsible, and Total allocation values. This is LeanLaw's primary compensation reporting tool.

Navigate to: Reports → By User → Compensation (Revenue by Attorney)

📋 Allocation required for full detail:   The Compensation report shows only Worked amounts unless origination, responsible, and firm share allocation percentages are configured in Settings → Compensation Tracking. See: Allocation Options & Share Settings — Revenue Distribution, Article 4.

Revenue Reports by Practice Area

Groups billed and collected revenue by practice area — showing which areas of the firm are generating the most revenue. Available as both a WIP, Billed, Collected view and a Revenue view.

Navigate to: Reports → By Practice Area → Revenue or WIP, Billed, Collected

Revenue Reports by Originating Attorney

Two dedicated reports track business development performance:

  • Collected by Originating: Revenue collected from matters where each attorney is set as originator. Shows origination amounts and percentages.
  • Billed by Originating: All billed line items credited to each originating attorney.

Navigate to: Reports → By User → Collected by Originating / Billed by Originating
