Lien Types and Negotiation Tracking

Understand the lien types supported in LeanLaw and how to track negotiation progress from original amount through final resolution.

Supported Lien Types

Type Description Examples
Medical Provider Healthcare provider asserting a right to payment from settlement proceeds Hospital bills, surgical center, physical therapy
Insurance Subrogation Insurance carrier seeking reimbursement for benefits paid Health insurer, auto insurer (MedPay/PIP)
Government (Medicare/Medicaid) Federal/state government program lien Medicare conditional payments, Medicaid liens
Letter of Protection Agreement to pay a provider from settlement proceeds Provider treating on LOP basis
Other Any other third-party obligation Attorney liens, child support liens, etc.

Tracking Negotiation Progress

For each lien, you can track:

  • Original Amount — What was initially asserted
  • Negotiated Amount — The current or agreed-upon reduced amount
  • Status transitions — Pending → Negotiating → Finalized → Paid

This gives firm leadership visibility into negotiation savings (original vs. final) per case.
